The 2016 Proprietary Red is an absolutely stunning wine from Pahlmeyer. Composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec which was sourced from the Pahlmeyer Estate Vineyard as well as Rancho Chimiles and Stagecoach. Winemaker Bibiana González Rave aged the wine in 85% new French oak barrels for 20-months and it is simply mesmerizing from the second it hits the glass. Aromas of black currants, black cherries, spices, graphite, earthy soil, chocolate, violets, savory herbs all come together beautifully. On this palate this possesses a gorgeous full body that is well-structured with big polished tannins and also shows wonderful overall balance and concentration. It continues to impress as it delivers layers of ripe dark fruits that build up to the fresh, supple finish that lingers on. The 2016 is absolutely sensational today and should continue to age remarkably well for decades to come. This may go down as one of the great vintages for this iconic Napa red.
