Oregon Report - Vol. I
Oregon Report: New Releases, 2012-2013
With intense torrential rain during harvest in 2013, many producers were less than optimistic about what was prior to that a near ideal growing season. Succeeding the highly impressive 2012 vintage, rated 95 points by International Wine Report, 2013 was considered as a setback vintage for some. However, speaking to many Oregon winemakers, especially those who picked before the rains, were happy with the results. Overall, I rated the 2013 vintage in Oregon 90 points. One producer that picked before the rains and excelled in 2013 was Archery Summit, who fielded a very strong lineup of wines including the highly impressive 2013 'Arcus Estate'. Brittan Vineyards fielded a highly impressive lineup as well, none more exceptional than their 2013 'Gestalt Block' Pinot Noir, which had an incredible combination of deep flavors and minerality. As for the 2012 releases, the scintillating White Rose 'Winemaker Cuvée', Cristom’s 2012 Matriarch Cuvée, as well as the 2012 Eyrie Vineyards 'Estate Grown' Pinot Noir stood out. Other Pinot Noirs which highlighted our tasting were two gorgeous wines from Domain Serene; 2012 Domaine Serene 'Mark Bradford Vineyard', and the 2012 Domaine Serene 'Evenstad Reserve' were both on a world-class level and should not be missed.
Chardonnay excelled in 2012/2013, none eclipsing the stunning 2013 Domaine Serene 'Evenstad Reserve' and the 2013 Domaine Serene Clos du Soleil Vineyard Chardonnay, showed gorgeous minerality and rich fruit flavors. Evening Land fielded a very serious Chardonnay lineup as well. The 2013 Evening Land 'Seven Springs Vineyard Summum' Chardonnay and the 2013 Evening Land, Seven Springs Vineyard La Source Chardonnay were absolutely gorgeous and structured bottlings that will cellar beautifully for another decade. Both vintages also had some wonderful value wines. As for value white wines, the 2013 Adelsheim Pinot Gris, the 2013 King Estate 'Signature' Pinot Gris both excelled at their pricepoint. While for Sparkling wine 2012 Argyle Brut is at top of its class for its price point.
Below are nearly 100 tasting notes on wines from 2012 and 2013, which are currently on the market and certainly worth seeking out.
