2013 Top 100 - Rank # 14
The 'Calderara Sottana' from Tenuta della Terre Nere is a single vineyard cru composed of 98% Nerello mascalese, 2% Nerello cappuccino which is produced only from vineyards between 50-100 years old with soils made of volcanic ash specked by black pumice and solid volcanic rock. The 2011 is a dazzling wine, offering wonderful aromas of ripe strawberries, cherries, smoke, tar, scorched earth, spices and beautiful fresh floral. Pure and focused with a core of gorgeous fresh red fruits which burst on the palate. This demonstrates impeccable balance and structure with an impressive long lasting spice-tinged finish.
