FORCE MAJEURE Red Wine 'Epinette' 2014

Force Majeure head winemaker Todd Alexander sought to make a right bank Bordeaux style wine from his estate fruit on Red Mountain, and has absolutely nailed this 2014 effort which will be released in roughly one year. This impressive wine is a blend of 58% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot which was aged 22 months in 80% new French oak. While still in its nascent phase and somewhat aromatically reticent at first, this excellent wine begins with aromatics of crème de cassis, anise, sagebrush, wild blackberry cobbler, sandalwood and mocha. There are deep flavors of anise, crème de cassis, green olive, mocha that sit alongside moderate to major tannins. This has a gorgeous texture and marvelous weight. After two plus hours of decanting this wine comes more alive and massive displaying a deeper, more muscular concentration with incredible viscosity. The range of flavors and aromatics are there, with the dense fruit weight that makes this wine a beautiful comparison to a top right bank Bordeaux. Kudos to Todd Alexander for crafting this excellent Merlot dominant wine, as he has captured the art of blending with this 'Epinette' release. (To be released August 2017). (Best 2017-2030) - August, 2016 (OB)
