The 2014 Montagny 1er Cru 'Le Vieux Château' is a gorgeous showing from one of Burgundy’s rising winemakers Olivier Chanzy. This comes from 25-year-old vines, which are located on an eastern-facing hillside, where the marl soils have a high content of limestone. These mineral characteristics certainly reflect in the wine as they make a wonderful impression throughout. As this slowly begins to open it releases simply delightful aromatics of lemon oil, fresh sliced pear, orange blossoms, crushed hazelnuts and streaks of pulverized stones all taking shape. On the palate this is beautifully balanced, with a lovely elegant character, as it displays wonderful precision through the finish. While this is already extremely appealing, I expect this will continue to take shape and gain further complexities with just a few more years in bottle. (Best 2017-2025) - November, 2016 (JD)
