BOSQUET DES PAPES Châteauneuf-du-Pape 'Chante Le Merle - Vieilles Vignes' 2014

2016 TOP 100 WINES | Rank #44

The Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes comes from a selection of old vines ranging 80-90 years old. This simply stunning wine is made from predominately from Grenache with the remaining Syrah and Mourvèdre. Impressive for its elegant personality and wonderful pure character, this opens with gorgeous aromas of fresh cherries and raspberries along with floral, wet stones, exotic spices and hints of licorice all bursting from the glass. This possesses a medium-plus body with a gorgeous round texture and remarkable overall balance and finesse. The fruit is beautifully concentrated, with a sappy character, as it expands seamlessly onto the refined, silky finish. This is one of the more impressive wines I have tasted from the vintage, and although this will continue to evolve over the next decade and beyond, it is already a pleasure to drink. (Best 2017-2030) - December, 2016 (JD)
