The 2015 'La Reserve de Malartic' is a sensational showing in this vintage. The blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc comes from well-drained gravels and clay gravels on shelly limestone and clay subsoil, offering a distinct mineral character which is quite evident in this wine. This was aged in traditional French oak barrels for 15 months and opens to seductive aromas of black cherries, blackberries and dark currants woven together with violets, sweet spices, graphite and hints of toast all soaring from the glass. On the palate this is full-bodied with beautifully polished tannins and a supple mouth feel. This continues to impress with its gorgeous ripe dark fruits, which are focused around a core of stony minerals expanding through the plush finish. While this is labeled as the “2nd wine” from Château Malartic-Lagraviere, make no mistake about it, the quality is clearly at a top level. (Best 2017-2030) - May, 2017 (JD)
