BODEGA CATENA ZAPATA Malbec 'Argentino' 2012

The 'Argentino' Malbec is sourced from two high elevation vineyards in Mendoza; Adrianna Vineyard (4,757 ft) and Nicasia Vineyard (3,593 ft), and are each treated as completely seperate components when makking this wine. The fruit from Adrianna Vineyard comes from mineral rich alluvial, gravelly soils with limestone deposits in the topsoil, and is co- fermented with Viognier. While the fruit from Nicasia comes from shallow loamy topsoils with surface gravel and a gravelly dry river bed subsoil and is co- fermented with Cabernet Franc. The characteristics of the high elevation and mineral rich soils are beautifully showcased in this wine, as it opens to complex aromas of ripe blackberries and red berries, along with freshly cut spring florals, loam, exotic spices, smoke, eucalyptus and dusty minerals all taking shape. On the palate this is full-bodied and well-structured with muscular tannins. It remains focused and beautifully balanced with a lovely combination of ripe fruit and bright acidity that adds wonderful lift and a sense of vibrancy through the long finish. Overall, this an absolutely fantastic Malbec, which is extremely attractive now and also displays remarkable aging potential.
