2015 TOP 100 WINES | Rank #95
The 2011 Vigno from De Martino is 85% old-vine Carignan, which includes 15% Malbec & Cinsault, sourced from a single-vineyard in Chile’s Maule Valley. The vineyard, La Aguada, is one of the closest Carignan plots to the Pacific Ocean and consists of soils composed of Granite with components of tufa rock and the vines are organic and sustainably dry-farmed & head-pruned. The wine itself is made in a style with characteristics similar to that of the Southern Rhône, or the Languedoc, with aromas of bright cherries, spicy-floral and earthy minerals, which all begin to take shape. This medium-bodied red demonstrates a beautiful balance of fruit and acidity, backed by a gorgeous silky texture which carries through to a refined finish. The wine spent 2 years in large previously-used neutral Austrian oak barrels (known as foudres), followed by 6 months in bottle. 600 cases made. (Best 2017-2022) - November, 2015 (JD)
