DOMAINE DES VAROILLES Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos des Varoilles 1er Cru 'Vieilles Vignes' 2013

Clos des Varoilles is a Monopole owned by Domaine des Varoilles. This 15-acre 1er Cru vineyard is located in the upper part of Gevrey-Chambertin and is uniquely positioned with a steep south-east exposure, one of the few vineyards in the Côte des Nuits to have a more southerly exposure, which allows the fruit more sun exposure to achieve optimal hipness levels. This is evident in the 2013 Clos des Varoilles 1er Cru ‘Vieilles Vignes’ and this wine bursts opens with attractive aromas of bright cherries and ripe raspberries woven together with dried floral, exotic spices, smoke and a sappy character. On the palate this is medium bodied and beautifully balanced with a gorgeous core of bright fruit and acidity backed by an irresistible fine, silky texture that makes a seamless transition into the sleek finish. The ripe, forward style makes this a wine which may be more appealing at a youthful age. (Best 2016-2026) - July, 2016 (JD)
