This Pinot Gris from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is made from only the oldest vines in the Monopole of Clos Windsbuhl. The vineyard faces south to south-east on the small Windsbuhl hill, which is at a high altitude for Alsace, at around 350 m above sea level. The soils here are composed of shelly limestone substratum (muschelkalk) rich in clay and chalky rock which are very thin in certain areas, this is a soil structure which is quite different from the rest of the commune. As far as the wine itself, the 2013 begins to open with aromas of freshly sliced pear, citrus zest and apricot followed by honeycomb, acacia blossom and an intense mineral character. On the palate this is rich, with an oily texture, which is balanced by lively acidity and a mineral driven core which continues on through the finish. This is impressive today, however it should be at its best with some additional bottle age. (Best 2017-2028) - January, 2016 (JD)
