DOMAINE PONSOT Chapelle-Chambertin 1990

The 1990 Domaine Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin is a fascinating wine. It releases intense aromas of high-toned bright red fruits, almost California like in character. This really evolves as it sits in the glass and starts to show its pedigree after about 1/2 hour. Then bold spices appeared as the fruit calmed a bit, but still overwhelmed the senses. On the palate, wonderful flavors of cherries, rhubarb and raspberries dominate. Amazing acidity still present to go with the intense fruit tells me this wine could easily last another 10 years or more. On the long finish, the character of the fruit turned to sour/tart cherry with hints of cheracol, just what the burgundy hound’s search for. This was most impressive for its clean, pure fruit, which is the main focus of the wine. A very enjoyable wine to drink and a classic hedonistic burgundy! (Best 2013-2023) - October, 2013 (JR)
