PAOLO BEA Sagrantino di Montefalco 'Pagliaro' 2005

Originating from the Hills of Montefalco in the Pagliaro vineyard the 2005 Paolo Bea Sagrantino di Montefalco 'Secco' (a term meaning "Dry") is an absolutely outstanding and gorgeous wine with striking purity. The fruit here is just so pure, consisting mostly of freshly crushed blackberry and light raisin backed by notes of smoky cedar, leather, licorice, orange peel, floral, and some eucalyptus. This is so well balanced and structured but the best feature about this wine may be incredible length it displays on the ultra-long finish. This continues to evolve with each second in the glass as it continues to take on more complexities as time passes. I can easily see this becoming even more compelling with additional bottle age, as this has the makeup to last well over another decade.. This 100% Sagrantino was aged 12 months in steel, 24 months in large oak barrels, 9 months in bottle and is another world-class effort by the Bea Family. (Drink 2015-2029) - February, 2012 (JD)
