POGGIO DI SOTTO Brunello di Montalcino, Riserva 2010

The 2010 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a simply gorgeous showing. The vines of Poggio di Sotto are situated on high hills overlooking the Orcia River Valley with parcels at three different altitudes. The altitude, along with soils consisting of decomposed seashell deposits, combine with the Orcia river and sea breezes on one side, and the protection of the ancient volcano Monte Amiata on the other, are unique characteristics which lead to making this remarkably elegant style Brunello. As this stunning Riserva begins to open it releases an array of attractive aromas, consisting of sweet wild berries and blackberries woven together with pretty floral, fresh sage, licorice and minerals just to name a few. However, this medium-bodied, refined Brunello may be most impressive for it impeccable balance, finesse and absolutely gorgeous silky, finessed texture. This is beautifully structured and possesses a lovely inner-sweetness backed by a layer of underlying acidity leading to the beautiful long finish. Overall, the 2010 Riserva is a completely compelling wine from one of the most highly respected estates in Montalcino, but patience will be required as this age-worthy, and dare I say “Burgundian-Style” Brunello, will need some additional bottle age before it reaches its full potential.
