The 2012 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino is an absolutely sensational showing in this vintage. Situated close to Castelnuovo dell’Abate, the vineyard produces extremely low yeilds and benefits from a unique microclimate influenced by the Orcia River, the Monte Amiata Volcano, and the Mediterranean Sea, resulting in a wine of exceptional purity and remarkable elegance. As this slowly unwinds it begins to release striking aromas of fresh red cherries and sliced strawberries woven together with flowers, spices and minerals and underliying hints of leather all taking shape in the glass. On the palate this is medium-bodied, refined and beautifully structured with fine tannins underlined by bright acidity keeping it fresh and vibrant. This continues to impress with its remarkable overall balance and finesse as it heads into the long, pretty finish that is marked by gorgeous red fruits and light spice notes. This classically made Brunello is one of the most beautiful wines from the vintage, and although it already shows some appealing characteristics, this is ultimately an age worthy wine, which will thrive in the cellar for many years to come.
