The 2017 'Il Carbonaione' is a fantastic showing in this vintage from Poggio Scalette. This 100% Sangiovese di Lamole is sourced from some 90-year-old vines in the Carbonaione vineyard. As far as the wine itself, it begins with inviting aromatics of dark cherries and plums with secondary notes if floral, spices, tar and hints of fresh tobacco all develop in the glass. On the palate this offers a medium-plus body with nicely polished tannins and displays notable overall balance through the finish. This spent 14 months in new/one-year-old oak, a combination of French (90%) and American (10%), followed by six months in bottle before release. Overall this is an absolutely outstanding effort in this challenging vintage from the winemaking team of Vittorio and Jurij Fiore.
