Composed of 82% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest small parts of Malbec and Petit Verdot, the 2020 L’Ecole Merlot Columbia Valley gives off aromas of Bing cherry and slight oak. Medium purple in color and initially carrying some heat and grippy tannins, this wine somewhat settles down with ample time. On the palate it shows tart black cherry, Luden’s cherry cough drop, and mild cigar wrapper. As it opens, it reveals both red and black raspberry and slight anise. It sports a somewhat short finish as it continues to unwind and soften with time and air. This wine needs a few years of cellaring before approach.
