DOSSIER Red Wine, Columbia Valley, Halo Reserve ‘Dissertation’ 2021

The 2021 Dissertation from Dossier is a mélange of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, 9% Malbec, and 4% Petit Verdot and spent 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. A brooding core of dark purple with a bluish tint, it speaks of what is to come. Copious aromas of black currants, dark cherries, mulberries, figs, cassis, cigar box, toasted cedary herbs, and dried bay leaf dominate the nose. I expected a big tannic beast on the palate, but it was incredibly elegant, well-rounded, and balanced in its approach. Don’t get me wrong, this needs time in the bottle to smooth out the crunchy, sweet tannins, and it will only improve over time. Winemaker Billo Naravane knocked it out of the park with this one. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.
