The 2014 Airfield Estates 'Reserve' Merlot is an outstanding effort from this vintage. This fourth generation winery, with its facilities within an old World War II airbase from which its name is derived, uses 100% of its own fruit from the estate vineyard in the foot of the Rattlesnake Mountains. The 2013 Airfield Reserve Merlot is small production wine with only 500 cases produced. It is of medium garnet hue with aromas of dark cherries, nutmeg and toast. The mouthfeel is rich and creamy with flavors of blueberry compote, milk chocolate and toasted almonds. Currently the tannins are subdued, as the wine very approachable for a relatively young vintage. This wine is a fantastic value from this Yakima valley estate. (Best 2017-2023) - April, 2017 (JH)
