The 2015 'The Prior' is composed of 75% Cabernet Franc sourced from 35-year old vines planted to the gravelly volcanic alluvial deposits of Frediani Vineyard, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon from Kenefick Ranch. It was aged in 80% new French Darnajou and Bossuet barrels. The wine begins with inviting aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, sweet spices, smoke, vanilla bean with hints of savory herbs and cocoa powder all taking shape. It possesses a full body, which is well structured and supported by velvety tannins. It displays notable concentration and depth with a core of ripe dark fruits and baking spices underlined by lovely minerality as it all heads into the long finish. Mike Hirby has crafted a delicious Cabernet Franc which is quite accessible today, however I expect this will become even more compelling with just a year or two of bottle age.
