The 2015 Atlas Peak Merlot from Duckhorn Vineyards is sourced from high elevation vineyards and was aged for 16 months in 50% new French oak. At this early stage the wine needs more than a one hour decant before it begins to fully express itself. Once the wine is awakened it begins to release copious red fruits with a leather and spicebox component that builds in the glass, as the earthy undertones continue to develop even more with more air. The wine shows off a silky texture with a wonderful purity of fruit at play. Red cherry candy, pomegranate seed, and wild blackberry pie flavors with mulberry come to mind. Pretty, with its red fruit character and silky tannins, this gorgeous wine will continue to evolve over the next fifteen plus years.
