SANTA MARIA LA NAVE Etna Rosso 'Calmarossa' 2015

The 2015 ‘Calmarossa’ is an utterly fascinating wine. Composed of 85% of Nerello Mascalese and 15% of Nerello Cappuccio, sourced from pre-phylloxera vines situated on the south-eastern slope of Mount Etna, 800 meters above the sea level, overlooking the Ionian Sea. The vineyard is grown with ancient bush-trained vines, which are planted on extreme slopes, at some points beyond 40%. The soils are composed of black sand and volcanic ashes that are rich in mineral content. The wine itself is completely captivating, as it begins with striking aromatics of ripe raspberries and macerated cherries which are woven together with fresh florals, exotic spices, wet lava stones and hints of orange zest all developing in the glass. On the palate this is all about balance and finesse, as it possesses a gorgeous silky texture with remarkable poise and elegance. It continues to impress with its outstanding precision and beautifully concentrated fruit, which persists through the gorgeous seamless finish. Sophisticated and classy, this is one of the finest wines being made on Mt. Etna. Production is limited, so readers should jump if given the opportunity to taste this truly brilliant Rosso from Santa Maria La Nave.
