The 'Bin 23 Kalimna' was first made by Penfolds in 1959, and was originally a single-vineyard wine made from the Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley. Today, it is a multi-regional blend, which includes sites primarily in the Barossa Valley, but also from McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Upper Adelaide and Wrattonbully. This excellent warm-climate Shiraz instantly takes on a toasty oak character on the nose, followed by black tea, blackberry pie and coffee grounds all taking shape in the glass. The mouthfeel is plush and inviting, as copious flavors of dark fruits and coffee grounds combine with an underlying citrus character all building up to the finish. While this is showing wonderful now, it should also continue to evolve nicely with some additional bottle age.
