The 2014 ‘Block B’ is a monumental showing from Epoch in this vintage. This 100% Syrah (Clone 174) was sourced entirely from the Paderewski Vineyard and was fermented 40% whole cluster in stainless steel tank and new 1/2-ton French oak puncheons before spending 18 months in new French oak barrels and puncheons (61% new). Displaying a pitch black, inky color this Syrah slowly begins to release aromatics of blackberries and blueberries along with violets, forrest floor, spices, earthy minerals and a touch of licorice which all add to its wonderful complexity. Full-boded, voluptuous and hedonistic, this majestic red continues to impress with its overall intensity and power, along with incredible concentration and depth. Structured with massive, yet beautifully polished tannins, this continues to impress as it delivers layer upon layer of ripe black and blue fruits which cascade on to the long, mouth coating finish. This is a serious Syrah, that certainly delivers some punch.
