The 2016 Cardinale is another masterpiece from winemaker Chris Carpenter, who has composed this from 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot which was sourced from mostly mountain vineyards across the valley and spent 20 months in 100% mostly new French oak. This instantly begins to captivate the senses with its seductive aromas of blackcurrants, crème de cassis woven together with baking spices, mocha, pencil shavings, tobacco, violets and loamy soil that all come together beautifully and burst from the glass. On the palate this is full-bodied with a supple texture that is layered and seamless. It continues to impress as flavors of fresh ripe dark fruits, mocha and sweet spices continue to resonate throughout and linger effortlessly on the long plush finish. This is an absolute beauty even at this early age, and should continue to thrive in the cellar for many years to come.
