The 2018 Viña Almavia is an absolutely spectacular showing in this vintage. The blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Carmenere, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot offer aromas which slowly start to build in the glass, led by blackberries, cassis and hints of blueberries accented with tobacco, violets, spices, roasted coffee and a touch of earthy nuances. This full-bodied red possesses a wonderful polished frame, with an expansive core of ripe dark fruits that generously layer the palate. Displaying wonderful concentration and focus, this continues to thoroughly impress all the way through the long, supple finish. The 2018 is an exceptional wine from Winemaker Michel Friou, which is already showing flashes of brilliance in its youth, but is ultimately an age worthy wine that should go on to have a marvelous future.
