This Chardonnay was sourced out of the famed Ritchie Vineyard from a block that was planted in 1972 to old Wente selection. Planted in pure Goldridge Loam soils, the vines are widely spaced old vines with gnarly trunks that produce tiny quantities of grapes per vine. The wine itself is stunning. As this slowly unwinds in the glass releasing aromas of poached pears and lemon oil which are layered with vanilla blossoms, honeysuckle, buttered almonds, crushed oyster shells and wet stones. It possesses a gorgeous round texture that is underlined with lovely underlying acidity. It continues to impress with a wonderful combination of ripe orchard fruits, salty minerals and hints of raw almonds that persist through the opulent, yet vibrant finish. This is a fantastic chardonnay from Ramey that becomes more compelling with extended air and should go on to evolve for at least a decade in the cellar.
