C.L. BUTAUD Red Wine, West Texas ‘Cease & Desist’ 2020

A surprisingly quaffable wine from C.L. Butaud, this is my first foray into Texas wines, and I’m pleasantly surprised. A light ruby neon core with a silvery rim in the glass, this blend of 37% Cinsault, 25% Tempranillo, 25% Grenache, and 13% Counoise is surprisingly light and acidic, possibly because they are picking early to achieve those levels. Aged for 21 months in a combination of new and used oak barrels and stainless steel, it’s fresh and lively on the palate. Notes of wild blueberry, black and red cherry, eucalyptus, red flowers, ground clove, freshly cut grass, and cedary herbs combine wonderfully in the glass. A lengthy fruit-forward and spicy finish complete the wine. Serve with a bit of chill on the bottle and enjoy during hot summer days. Only 200 cases made.
