The 2013 Montes 'Purple Angel' is another stunning new release by Montes. The vineyards for this wine are located in the Marchigüe and Apalta sub-regions of the Colchagua Valley. Aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels, the wine is a compelling blend of 92% Carmenere and 8% Petit Verdot, and has the classic Chilean smoky and vegetal character. The wine begins with intense aromas of green bell pepper, anise, smoke and black cherry. There are deep flavors of blackberry pie, blueberry, anise, green bell pepper and spicebox. There is just a gorgeous range of flavors and purity of fruit to this fantastic wine. The structure of this wine tells me this will be a long ager, as the Carmenere will cellar beautifully for at least another decade. This has a wonderful Bordelaise feel.
