M. CHAPOUTIER Banyuls Vin Doux Naturel 2010

Spread out on narrow and steep terraces, the Banyuls Appellation overhangs the Mediterranean sea. More than two thousand years old, the vineyards are still hand-worked, and are rooted in stony schist soils. The 2010 Banyuls Vin Doux Naturel from Chapoutier delivers amazing aromas of raisin, dark plum reduction, cocoa powder, coffee and fresh minerals which flow effortlessly from the glass. This has a beautiful rich silky texture, echoing sweet dried black fruits, cocoa and and minerals on the finish. The grapes for this fortified dessert wine are hand picked when very ripe. They are destemmed and crushed. A long fermentation is halted with the addition of pure alcohol, retaining natural sugars and ensuring a good extraction of aroma, flavor, and tannin. This is approachable now, and will also hold up nicely in the cellar for those who wish to wait.
