The 2016 Domaine de la Solitude Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Cuvée Barberini’ is composed of 45% Grenache, 45% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre. It begins with profound aromas of dark cherries, raspberry coulis, violets, spices with underlying notes of smoldering tobacco and crushed stones all taking shape in the glass. On the palate this shows remarkable depth and concentration with a gorgeous velvety, plush texture that is laced with wonderful ripe black/red fruits and spices that continue to leave an impression all the way through the finish. While this already shows a ton of early appeal, it will ultimately require at least a few more years of additional bottle age before it hits its stride.
