2014 TOP 100 WINES | Rank #7
The 2009 Salvioni Brunello di Montalcino is absolutely stunning, showing lovely elegance and terrific structure for the vintage. This opens up with sensational aromas of cherries and sweet plums, along with spices, earthy minerals and floral. It demonstrates wonderful purity as well as impeccable balance and finesse, ending with a beautiful silky finish. This has all the elements of an outstanding Brunello and is one of the very best to come from this vintage. The wine was aged in medium toasted Slavonian oak barrels, which are located in two cellars: one on the estate where the oldest barrels are kept, while the newer barrels are in the cellar in the historic center of Montalcino under the family home. While this is certainly approachable today with just a little air contact, it also possesses something very few wines have in 2009, the potential to age. Overall, a fantastic job by Giulio Salvioni and winemaker Attilio Pagli, and a wine I would love to have in my personal cellar to visit again in the future.
