ELVIO COGNO Barolo, Riserva 'Vigna Elena' 2009

The 'Vigna Elena' Barolo Riserva is only produced in great vintages, and in 2009 it is simply stunning. This is a clone of Nebbiolo, called "Nebbiolo Rosè" which is sourced from vineyards located halfway up the Ravera hill with the 100% estate vines, planted to mainly limestone and clay soils, with the presence of some sand. The 2009 is a completely compelling wine, offering gorgeous aromas if red and black berries layered with fresh floral, mint, white pepper, bold spices and a touch of cocoa powder. It continues to impress on the palate with gorgeous overall balance and finesse, driven by fine, silky tannins that firm up and grip hold on the finish. A remarkable showing that looks as if will have an even brighter future. The Nebbiolo was aged 36 months in large (40 hl/1,057 gallons), used Slavonian oak, prior to an additional 24 months in bottle. 500 cases made. (Best 2018-2030) - September, 2015 (JD)
