The 2017 ‘Magma’ is an utterly fascinating wine from Frank Cornelissen. This stunning Nerello Mascalese is Cornelissen’s Grand Vin and it is only produced in exceptional vintages. It is sourced from over 100-year-old un-grafted vines planted in the Barbabecchi vineyard, which is situated at 910 meters above sea level which a North-North East exposure, allowing the fruit to capture the first and cool morning sun rays. This is reflected beautifully in the wine as it instantly impresses with its intoxicating aromatics of sweet red and dark berries, florals, dried exotic spices, tangerine rind, black tea leaf, wet stones and earthy mineral nuances all taking shape. On the palate the combination of purity and sense of place is a thing of beauty, as it displays striking elegance and finesse, with a gorgeous silky texture that is incredibly concentrated and displays remarkable overall precision and balance. It goes on to impress as it shows a bright zesty flavor profile of black raspberries, blood orange, florals and exotic spices which continue to add wonderful complexity as they build through the finish. While this is absolutely outstanding now, it also possesses lovely aging potential and should have a sensational future ahead. Overall, this is an absolutely brilliant wine, and one of most impressive wines ever from the region.
