December, 2011 - The Fattorie Romeo Del Castello Etna Vigo originates from 70-year-old vines that were miraculously spared when lava flow from Etna's 1981 eruption changed direction just before it reached the vines. This 2008 blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio shows notes of raspberry, candied strawberry, smoke along with some sulfur and metallic characteristics as well. This is medium bodied and wrapped up in soft silky tannins. A solid wine and it's possible this just needs a bit more time to flesh out, but I have had very similar wines from this region for just a fraction of the price. (Drink 2011-2015) – JD
