The Calabretta Etna Rosso is Nerello Mascalese with a bit Nerello Cappuccio from soils composed of black volcanic ash and sand which are fine and almost silty, with lots of lava rocks and good drainage. The 2001 brings wonderful old-world Nebbiolo charm with aromas of dried blackberries and wild berries mixed with smoke, scorched earth, crushed stones and hints of basil. This demonstrates remarkable balance and focus with a tightly wound core and long chewy finish. Just a sensational wine and an serious value. (Best 2013-2020) - September, 2013 (JD)
