DONNAFUGATA 'Mille e una Notte' 2011

The 2011 'Mille e una Notte' is a dark and brooding red, composed of Nero d'Avola, Petit Verdot, Syrah and other grapes from south-western Sicily, Contessa Entellina Estate and nearby areas. This spent 14 months in new French oak barriques and then in the bottle for at least 36 months. The oak treatment is evident at this early stage, as this opens with aromas of ripe blackberries and dark cherries followed by graphite, pencil shavings, spices, toast and a touch of dusty leather. On the palate this possesses a full body, which is richly textured and deeply layered backed by underlying acidity and a streak of minerality at its core. There are waves of ripe dark fruits and spices, which continue to carry on and linger on the long finish. While this is already delicious, I expect this will become even more appealing as it continues to soften over the next decade. (Best 2018-2030) - December, 2016 (JD)
