The Savoia Amarone comes from a tiny 10 hectare property in the hilly area of the classic Valpollicella, with vines planted in calcareous-marble soil. The 2005 offers intoxicating aromas of black cherries, sweet raisins, smoke, lavender, sage, pepper, dark chocolate and dusty minerals, which all burst from the glass. This is a massive wine with great depth and concentration, but by no means over the top or jammy. It displays a wonderful seamless structure, as well as excellent focus and balance, ending in a long, finessed finish. Only about 10% of Savoia's best juice makes it into their Amarone, which comes out to around 125 cases. This Amarone consists of 60% Corvina, 10%, Corvinone, 10% Rondinella and 10% Molinara, which are put to rest in a special room for 3/5 months, after which it is refined in oak barrels to mellow about 4/5 years or more. Today the wine is showing fantastic, however there is no doubt it will continue to evolve gracefully for many years to come. (Best 2014-2026) - March, 2014 (JD)
