aken from this really good vintage in Rioja, the 2012 ‘Gran Reserva’ is sourced from 35-50 year old vineyards with some parcels in Rioja Alta that are 65-85 years old. The wine is a blend of mostly Tempranillo (85%) with smaller parts Graciano and Garnachawas that was aged for 25 months in French oak prior to bottling. Right away the heady toasty oak aromatics meld with the core of red fruits, citrus rind and tobacco leaf on this beautiful nose. The palate is soft and elegant with a silky texture. Layers of red currants, wild blackberry and coffee ground tones combine with light tannins and shades of peat moss and blood orange zest. A delight to savor in its youth, the 2012 ‘Gran Reserva’ has a very long life ahead of it.
