The 2005 'Vina Ardanza' is a fantastic blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from the estates 30-year-old plots 'La Cuesta' and 'Montecillo', located in Fuenmayor and Cenicero. The Garnacha comes from ancient vines planted at a 600 meter altitude in Tudelilla (Rioja Baja), on plots adjoining 'Finca La Pedriza'. The wine itself opens up with aromas dried blackberries and chrerries followed by vanilla, toasted coconut, spices, fresh mineral and a touch of cedar. It shows excellent structure on the palate, with a gorgeous balance of fruit and acidity backed by silky tannins, which grip nicely on the long finish that leaves behind fresh blackberries and a sweet/spicy oak character. A terrific wine that accessible now and will continue to evolve over the next decade. (Best 2015-2025) - March, 2015 (JD)
