The 2012 'Astrales' Ribera del Duero by Bodegas Los Astrales is a stunner and cellar-worthy wine from this property. Bodegas Los Astrales owns 15 hectares located in the small town of Anguix of which 9 are vineyards of 20 to 70 year old vines. During 2003 and 2004, they planted another 14 hectares of Tempranillo. Vines are grown in vaso form with shorter trunks than in most of Ribera del Duero helping to shield the vines from the wind which contributes to the accumulation of polyphenols and sugars. This Ribera del Duero wine, which was aged for 20 months in 80% new French oak, is a stunner in its youth, currently showing meaty, rich and intense aromatics and flavors. Smoked brisket, creosote, cassis liqueur and black olive tapenade come to mind. The exceedingly long, mineral driven finish accentuates this gorgeous Ribera.(Best 2017-2030) - February, 2017 (OB)
