The Bel Canto is a terrific right bank style Washington wine, blending 56% Merlot with 44% Cabernet Franc. While their terrific 2013 version (a 94 pointer) had 75% Cabernet Franc, this one is a little over half Merlot. Immediately upon opening, the nose offers very little indication of what a tremendous wine this will become over time. After decanting for an hour, the nose displays rose petals and cherries, while blackberries, olives and cocoa powder arrive on the palate, and aggressive, gripping tannins linger. A few years in the cellar will reward you with a complex, big, balanced wine.
