FORCE MAJEURE Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

It has been highly impressive to see how this estate has performed following the hire of head winemaker Todd Alexander from Napa's Bryant Family Vineyards. Todd's hand is clearly evident in this hedonistic Cabernet wine is composed of 93% Cabernet with 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Todd saw the blending as adding to the aromatics of this wine. Needing considerable time in the decanter to unwind and be aromatically expressive, Cabernet wine opens with a bouquet of crème de cassis, creosote, mocha, eucalyptus and black cherry. This leads to intense flavors of mocha, black cherry, anise, crème de cassis, eucalyptus and coffee grounds with a hint of white pepper that sit alongside some moderate to major tannins. This Cabernet has tremendous weight and viscosity as this massive wine improves considerably following a two hour decant. The mid-palate weight and mouthfeel is lovely. The tension of this wine is also impressive considering the heat of this vintage and that this is taken from the Force Majeure estate vineyard, a warm growing site in Red Mountain. This decadent wine really needs at least another year of bottle age for these deep tannins to settle and for more dark fruit profiles to fully integrate. These two amazing Bordeaux varietal future releases by superstar winemaker Todd Alexander have now made their red carpet entrance to the high end of the Washington wine scene.
