HERTELENDY Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2014

The 2014 Hertelendy Cabernet Sauvignon includes 11% Petit Verdot, 7% Merlot, 5% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc to round out the blend. The fruit is sourced from mountainside vineyards on Pritchard Hill, Atlas Peak, Silverado foothills, and this is the first vintage to include fruit from Hertelendy’s Rockwell Ridge Estate Vineyard, which is situated at an elevation of 1365 feet on the foothills of Howell Mountain, planted to 23 year old vines. The wine itself spent 23 months in 90% new French oak, and begins with aromas of ripe blackberries, dark currants, loam, graphite, mocha and sweet oak nuances all taking shape beautifully in the glass. Full-bodied, layered and nicely structured with wonderful opulence and underlying acidity keeping it all in check though the ultra-long, layered and expansive finish. While already extremely impressive, I expect this will hit its stride after some additional bottle age and subsequently continue to cellar marvelously for many years.
