The 'Artefact' is sourced from Kenefick Ranch in Calistoga, which is located across Pickett Road from the old Eisele Vineyard and the Alfred Frediani Vineyard. The vineyard consists of some of the youngest soil in Napa Valley, largely comprised of decomposed volcanic rock and stones, which are well-drained, ideal for the Cabernet Sauvignon Clones 7, 191, and 341 selected to make to produce ‘Artefact’. The wine itself begins with an inviting aromatic profile of ripe cherries, blackberries and red plums, which are laced with fresh-tilled soil, graphite, dried exotic spices, dried florals and subtle hints of smoke that all immediately come together seamlessly in the glass. On the palate this is full-bodied, beautifully structured and remarkably well-balanced. It continues to impress with its wonderful poise and elegance, as well as a gorgeous combination of ripe red and dark fruits that extend through the long polished finish. Overall, this is simply fascinating wine from Mike Hirby that is nothing short of outstanding today, yet should also age marvelously over the next two decades.
