SAVIAH CELLARS Syrah, Rocks District Milton-Freewater ‘The Funk’ 2020

Standing atop the ratings of a stunning 2020 vintage from Saviah Cellars is the 2020 ‘The Funk” Syrah. Co-fermented with 4% Viognier and partial whole cluster, this wine spent 18 months in 40% new French oak. Carrying the deepest purple hue and giving off aromas of violets and carnations, this had a wonderful tannic structure and mouthfeel. Dense, velvety, and plush throughout, this mouthcoating effort revealed blueberry and Chambord on the fruit side of the equation. Charcoal, smoked brisket and sage served up a savory side dish in a smooth and complimentary fashion. My scribbled notes are filled with ‘seamless’, ‘sexy’, ‘stunning’, ‘smooth’ and “sublime’. The blueberry and charcoal remained present late in the game, with a touch of fig paste emerging as it headed toward the finish line. One of my favorite Syrah’s to emerge from The Rock District. Fantastic now, it should only get better over the next 20 years.
