SAVIAH CELLARS Red Wine, Rocks District Milton-Freewater ‘Hunt and Gather’ 2020

One of the many showstoppers in the stacked lineup from Saviah Cellars is the 2020 Hunt and Gather Red Wine. A delectable blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Syrah and hailing from the Funk Estate Vineyard in the Rocks District, it spent 19 months in 50% new French oak and has a beautiful inky purple color. Slightly tight early and carrying a bit of heat, it soon settles down and then the game is on. Intense blackberry and black raspberry hit you out of the gate, with ample anise, charcoal and slight white pepper joining in for good measure. This is a dense wine, that manages to be light on its feet as it moves mid-palate through finish, giving up bacon fat and savory umami late in the game. One of the better Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah blends that you find out there, this is a blending masterpiece and a wine that should not be missed. Give this a year or two of cellaring and then enjoy for 15+ years.
