My second favorite wine from the Force Majeure tasting, the SJR Vineyard 100% Syrah from the Walla Walla Valley. Last year’s vintage was exceptional, and this wine matches it in every way. Almost at a loss of words to describe just how good this wine is but it encapsulates why Washington State makes the best Syrah in the world and competes with the Rhone head-to-head. Gorgeous deep purple with a ruby rim in the glass the nose pops with aromas of ground coffee, smoked beef ribs, black olive tapenade, wet loamy earth, dried violet and cedary herbs. The palate explodes with flavor with an insane finish that I can taste minutes after my last sip, giving luscious dark fruit, smokey spices and completely envelopes the sense of place that comes from the SJR Vineyard. It’s perfectly balanced despite the 15% alcohol level. As with most Force Majeure wines, give this a few years in the cellar and then get ready to be blown away for over a decade. Highly recommended.
