Ruby in color and carrying an expressive nose of tart plum and juniper, the 2020 Woodward Canyon Estate Merlot is a wonderful expression of this varietal. Spending 20 months in 47% new French and Hungarian oak, it possesses a settled, balanced and soft profile. Morello cherries, milk chocolate and mild espresso beans hit you upon entry, all enveloped by an ample and fine tannic structure. With time in the glass, licorice and bittersweet cocoa emerge. It held its structure and backbone through the bold and long finish, continuing to showcase cherries and chocolate. It never budged an inch along the way during the entire process. Give this wine a year or two of cellaring and then enjoy for 15 years or more.
