Château Haut-Bailly has crafted an exceptional wine in this difficult vintage, which presented a cool start to the growing season with frost conditions. Fortunately, Haut-Bailly was spared due to its position on a raised outcrop that provides protection, and only a few parcels located on the lowest parts of the property were lightly affected before things began to warm up and ultimately ended in one of the latest harvests in years. A decade later the 2008 is showing simply marvelously, as it beings with absolutely gorgeous aromas of blackberries and dark cherries which are woven together with flowers, charcoal and mineral nuances. The palate offers a medium body with fine, silky tannins that are beautifully integrated as it goes on to impress with its outstanding balance and focus through the graceful finish. Hats off to Haut-Bailly, as the 2008 is total success and an absolute delight to drink at this stage in its evolution. I suspect it will be difficult to find another wine from the vintage as compelling as this.
